LETTER:American success no excuse for terror
September 9, 2002
While I respect his right to his own view, Dustin Kass’ editorial concerning his unfortunate lack of patriotism is deeply disturbing to me. Initially, he points out that Americans have made others’ lives a “living hell.” Despite the truth to this statement it must be recognized that this is only a small group of individuals who do not represent the entire nation, and to blame the entire United States for their actions is just plain wrong. Kass also goes on to tell us that it was irresponsible to overthrow a government that supported terrorist activities that killed thousands of innocent lives on American soil. This action clearly and effectively illustrated our stance that we will not tolerate terrorist activities.
Don’t get me wrong, I acknowledge a person’s right to his opinion; however, Kass blames our own success as a country as reason for terrorism, which is simply unbelievable. He tells us that it was jealously, not evil, that caused others to do this horrendous act. Jealously? You’re joking, right? Since when is it not evil to murder thousands of civilians by hijacking an airplane and flying it into buildings?
I will also stand for the national anthem, and I am proud to be part of this nation, and while some mistakes were made, overall I am proud of how we handled this act of evil. I cannot see a reason to not love a nation where we are allowed to question the actions of our leaders and where we all have the chance to be who we want to be. United We Stand!
