LETTER:Smoke-free and proud

As everyone returns to campus this fall, we can celebrate the fact that Ames bars and restaurants are smoke-free between 6 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. This month marks the first anniversary of the Ames Smoke-Free Dining Ordinance. Also, all ISU dorm rooms are now smoke-free, thanks to action taken last year by the Inter-Residence Hall Association.

It is only my honor and ultimate hope to make a difference that I serve on the Ames Tobacco Task Force. I believe that taking leadership means to serve others to the best of one’s ability and move towards creating positive change. I feel that the Ames tobacco ordinance is a tremendous stride in the right direction. First and foremost, I advocate for a healthier environment and this ordinance is positive step for ensuring public health. Ames has gained a good reputation as a public health leader and the city council, as well as the community, should be commended for being the first in the state.

I realize as a college student, temptation is high and it seems as though college students, including myself, want to make their own personal decisions, even if it means screwing up and learning things the hard way at times. But, I know one component holds true: Whatever decisions we make now as college students will affect our lives in the future. So, I encourage you all to please join me, during this first anniversary celebration of the Ames tobacco ordinance, in making decisions that will directly make a positive difference in our society and make the path brighter for our future.
