Morgan named men’s basketball assistant coach
Wayne Morgan, the former head coach at Long Beach State with over 30 years of coaching experience, will join the ISU men’s basketball coaching staff, head coach Larry Eustachy announced today. Morgan replaces former assistant Lance Irvin, who left to join the staff at Illinois State in June.
“Wayne will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff.” Eustachy said. “He has been a top-notch collegiate head coach and assistant coach for over 30 years, and his experience and knowledge will be a key part of our program’s success. We are all very excited about his decision to join us at ISU.”
The addition of Morgan rounds out Iowa State’s men’s basketball coaching staff for the upcoming 2002-03 season.
Morgan spent the last six years as head coach at Long Beach State, where he compiled a 91-84 overall mark and a 55-39 record in the Big West Conference. His 1999-2000 squad was 24-6 overall and 15-1 in the Big West en route to winning his first and only conference championship.
Prior to his stint at Long Beach State, Morgan gained prestige as one of the best assistant coaches in the nation at Syracuse from 1984 to 1996.
Morgan’s work as a recruiter helped Syracuse land some of the nation’s best prospects during his time with the Big East power. Morgan was credited with bringing Sherman Douglas, Conrad McRae, Adrian Autry, Lawrence Moten, John Wallace and Otis Hill to SU.
