LETTER:Respect the rights of atheists
July 15, 2002
We’re out! We Doubt! Now deal with it!
I am tired of people forgetting about those of us with no religion at all. Atheists and agnostics are not second-class citizens. Just because we dare to seek our civil liberties does not give anyone the right to threaten our lives. Every minority has rights that transcend the power of the majority in our country.
As for the Pledge of Allegiance, the government is not allowed to take any position when it comes to religion. Our Constitution makes no mention of any god and neither should our government.
Beyond that, the inclusion of the phrase “Under God” denies the main aim of the pledge. We are not “one nation, indivisible” if we divide ourselves along religious lines. It’s “liberty and justice for all” not liberty and justice for paternal monotheists.
