University to fill assistant dean/greek affairs post in two weeks
July 17, 2002
The Dean of Students Office finished its last interview for the assistant dean of students/director of greek affairs position on Tuesday and hopes to have a decision within two weeks.
“We have an outstanding greek community, and as a result, it attracted excellent candidates,” said Pete Englin, dean of students.
Englin said he is very pleased with the people who were invited to campus.
The position has been open since the summer of 2001, when the previous assistant dean left for a position at Texas A&M, Englin said.
“Our hope is to have someone named before two weeks,” he said.
“We are looking for someone who has a passion for working with students, and someone who can establish goals for creating an outstanding greek community,” Englin said.
Englin said the position is responsible for assisting and recruitment, the intake process for new membership, acting as an advisor to three different greek communities and enhancing and proving leadership opportunities for greek members.
“We hope the next person will be building on our past successes,” he said.
“Our greek community is recognized for its outstanding leaders, generating thousands of dollars, participating in thousands of hours of community service and achieving high academic levels.”
The four candidates who were selected were interviewed on separate days and had to meet with various directors from the Dean of Students Office and participate in an open forum from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union to respond to questions as part of the interview process.
“I saw it as an opportunity to work with a strong group of individuals.” said Alisa Frandsen, candidate and current interim assistant dean of students/director of greek affairs.
Frandsen said she has really enjoyed the past year in the position and enjoyed getting a chance to work with the students at Iowa State.
“I see that the greek community is moving in a positive direction,” Frandsen said. “And I’d be honored to be a part of that.”
As an internal candidate, she hopes to continue to move in the direction that the student leaders and staff have moved in the past year, she said.
The three other candidates for the assistant dean of students/director of greek affairs came from different schools from all over the Midwest.
The candidates interviewed were: Stanley Sweeney, associate director of student activities for greek affairs at Indiana University at Bloomington; Camilla Wacker, assistant director of the Office of Residential and greek Life at the University of Nebraska at Kearney; James Parker, former associate director of the Center for Student Life at the University of Oklahoma at Norman; and Alisa Frandsen, interim assistant dean of students/director of greek affairs at Iowa State.
