Bono makes U.S. World Team

ISU assistant wrestling coach Chris Bono defeated Bill Zadick of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club two matches to one in a special wrestle-off for the 145.5-pound spot on the 2002 U.S. World Freestyle Team Saturday at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

“I knew going into the match I could beat him (Zadick),” Bono said. “I was prepared and I believed in myself. I set out to do what I had to do.”

Zadick won the first match and Bono took the second match.

In the final match, Bono found himself in a hole early as Zadick jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Bono was able to score on a takedown to cut the lead to 2-1 going into the second period.

In the second period, Bono used a takedown with one minute remaining in regulation to tie the match at 2-2.

After neither wrestler scored in the final minute, Zadick won the coin toss in the extra period and had to lock first in the clinch. After a few seconds in the clinch, Zadick lost his grip, giving up the final point necessary for Bono to win.

“It’s a great feeling to be a member of the World Team and I will work hard to prepare myself for Iran,” Bono said.

Bono and ISU’s Cael Sanderson are set to compete in the 2002 Freestyle World Championships in Tehran, Iran, Sept. 4-7.
