New Powers movie a smash
“Austin Powers in Goldmember” shagged up a whopping $71.4 million over the three-day weekend on its way to a litany of box-office records.
New Line’s third outing of the manic swinger’s absurd adventures bagged the title of biggest-ever July opener (beating last summer’s “Planet of the Apes'” $68.5 million debut) and the biggest-ever comedy opener (surpassing the studio’s own
“Rush Hour 2″‘s $67.4 million). “Goldmember” also had its mojo working enough to notch the third-best debut of the year (behind only “Spider-Man” and “Star Wars: Episode II-Attack of the Clones”), and the fifth-best of all time.
Counting the $3.5 million scored during its preview screenings Thursday, “Goldmember” has grossed an estimated $75 million.
Cocaine linked to Entwistle
A bad heart and too much cocaine combined to kill Who bassist John Entwistle, the Clark County, Nevada, coroner announced Thursday. The death was ruled accidental and not an overdose.
The pioneering musician and Who co-founder was found dead in his room at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel on June 27 – just one day before the band’s tour was scheduled to start.
“The heart attack we believe was brought on by the significant amount of cocaine,” that was in Entwistle’s system at the time of death, coroner Ron Flud told the Associated Press.
