LETTER:Fill Friley with homeless

It saddens me to hear about these occurrences where DPS has to be called in to chase homeless people away from campus. However, I do understand why the university has to take action against these people due to their nature and liabilities that ISU could face.

I sit here and decipher the fact that instead of chasing these people away, ISU should try to reach out to them. There is more than enough room in Friley for summer housing. Why doesn’t ISU offer these homeless people a chance at something they my never have again in their lives?

ISU and members of the Ames community would benefit from providing a program for the homeless that would provide them meals and shelter under the condition that they work or receive some education. I understand that these people do not always have the best learning or working skills. This might be a golden opportunity for a person whom is an education major to work with these people in developing the skills they need in their lives.

I would love the chance to work with these people and live with them. It would be much better than a roommate that sleeps all day and plays video games all night. I would love to hear their stories and try to understand what their lives have been about. This would enrich the university as well as the students in understanding our own American diversity.
