ISU assistant Irvin leaves program
ISU assistant men’s basketball coach Lance Irvin will take a position on an ISU team next season. Unfortunately, the Chicago native is headed back to his home state and Illinois State University.
“I’ve always been a big fan of Missouri Valley Conference basketball, particularly Illinois State,” Irvin said in a statement released by the school. “I’ve always associated Illinois State with players that graduate and a rich tradition. Growing up in Chicago and working at both Loyola and DePaul, you can’t help but admire the program at Illinois State.”
Both Irvin and head basketball coach Larry Eustachy were unavailable for comment Monday.
Irvin spent one year at Iowa State under Eustachy, his former coach. Irvin played for Eustachy at Idaho, averaging 3.6 points per game and attaining the third-highest assist total on the team with 56.

ISU swimming signs top prep
Iowa’s 2001 state prep 100-meter backstroke champion, Jamie Wieben of Ankeny, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Iowa State University beginning in the fall of 2002, Head Coach Duane Sorenson announced.
At the 2001 IGHSAU Swimming and Diving Championships, Wieben swam to a first-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke, a second-place showing in the 100-meter freestyle and anchored the Hawks’ state champion 400 freestyle relay team. She also clocked the fastest backstroke split at the meet as a memeber of Ankeny’s third-place 200-meter medley relay team. Wieben will compete in freestyle and backstroke events for the Cyclones.
