Former Cyclone pitcher called up
Cedar Rapids native and former Iowa State pitcher Shawn Sedlacek made his major league debut Tuesday night with the Kansas City Royals, earning no decision against the Expos. He scattered 2 runs and 2 hits over 5 2-3 innings in his impressive debut. Sedlacek is the second Cyclone hurler to make his big league debut this season. Sedlacek’s Cyclone teammate, Nate Teut, started one game for the Florida Marlins last month.
Sedlacek has been one of the Royals’ rising stars this season. The 6-3 righthander was 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA in his last six starts with Omaha Royals, Kansas City’s triple-A affiliate. Sedlacek was a 14th round draft pick by Kansas City in 1998 after a successful two-year career with the Cyclones. He led the Cyclones in wins (6), strikeouts (65) and innings pitched (77) as a senior in 1998.
