Sullivan selected to All-star team

Iowa State’s Jake Sullivan has been selected to a Big 12 Conference basketball all-star team which will tour Scandinavia in August.

Sullivan was a third-team all-Big 12 pick last season, averaging 16.0 points per game. He ranked third nationally in three-point percentage and fifth nationally in free-throw percentage. The Big 12’s 2001 Freshman of the Year was also a Verizon Academic All-District VII honoree, as well as a member of the Big 12’s all-academic and all-underrated teams.

Under the direction of Baylor head coach Dave Bliss, the team will play six games in Sweden, Norway and Denmark from August 5-16. The Big 12 all-star team consists of one player from each conference school and includes 10 upperclassmen.

Hornbacher new soccer assistant

Rebecca Hornbacher will join the Iowa State soccer staff as an assistant coach, ISU head coach Stephanie Gabbert announced today.

Hornbacher comes to Iowa State after coaching in the Baylor and Hartford soccer programs. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Baylor in 1998. Hornbacher served as an assistant coach for the Bears during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. After three seasons at Baylor, Hornbacher spent the 2001 season as an assistant coach at the University of Hartford.

While at Baylor, Hornbacher was active in reccruiting and also served as the co-director of Baylor University Soccer Camps. She organized the Baylor Kick-Off program, which provided the Baylor soccer team with opportunities to interact with children in the community. Hornbacher served on the Women’s Athletic Cabinet at Baylor and represented the school in the X-Games. Hornbacher has been an instructor at several soccer camps and clinics.

Hornbacher’s playing experience includes a two-year stint at the University of Virginia, where she accumulated a 0.78 career goals against average. Hornbacher moved on to the University of Nebraska for the 1996 and 1997 seasons. At Nebraska, she earned second-team All-Big 12 honors twice and set season records in saves and wins. Hornbacher was the goalkeeper for the Boston Breakers of the Women’s United Soccer Association during the 2001 season.

Hornbacher earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a sociology minor from Nebraska in 1997. She earned a master’s degree in sport management from Baylor in 2000.

Recker, Evans Pearson not taken

Luke Recker and Reggie Evans, both former standouts for the Iowa Hawkeyes and considered possible draft picks, were not chosen in the NBA Draft Wednesday night.

Former Iowa State star Tyray Pearson was also left without a team.
