Cyclones fare well in California
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Iowa State senior Lisa Griebel placed fourth in the shot put and Cyclone junior Gina Curtis fifth in the high jump Friday night at the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Griebel, a six-time All-American at ISU, hit her best distance, 54-5 1/2, on her last two throws. Those efforts were a season best.
Curtis, a four-time All-American and the NCAA indoor runner-up, cleared 5-10 3/4 in cool conditions.
“The weather was far from ideal,” ISU assistant track coach Ron McEachran said. “The warmest it got was maybe 60 degrees. In the high jump only six jumpers – just two collegians – cleared opening height. But Gina gave a good effort. Lisa threw her season best and has been asked to compete with Gina on the U.S. team at the North American-Caribbean Under 25 Championships in San Antonio (Texas) Aug. 9 through 11.”
Iowa State freshman Keosha Sanders was a finalist in the U.S. Junior 400-meter hurdles after clocking 1:00.83 seconds in the semifinals.
