`Voyager’ script writer auditions for associate director position

One of George Brozak’s most noteworthy achievements doesn’t contain a single note.

Brozak, candidate for the associate director of bands position, has written not only music, but scripts as well. He wrote the script for two Star Trek episodes – “Broken Link” for Deep Space Nine and “False Profits” for Voyager.

“I had an idea so I contacted them and sent it in. It’s just something fun,” Brozak said. “I don’t dress up in costumes or anything.”

A graduate teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a doctoral candidate, Brozak was the last of three candidates to conduct Iowa State’s Symphonic Band as part of his interview for the position opening this summer. The three were chosen from about 25 applicants.

“The band played very well and responded well to what I wanted,” Brozak said.

The position involves teaching classes and conducting the Cyclone Marching Band, Symphonic Band and basketball pep bands.

“It has a beautiful campus, the faculty has been excellent and everything has been handled professionally, both before I got here and while I’ve been here,” Brozak said.

The search committee for the new music faculty member consisted of assistant professors of music Michael Golemo and Mark Laycock and associate professors of music Kevin Schilling and Barry Larkin.

The committee has encouraged students to give them their input and have dedicated an hour of each candidate’s time to meeting with students in order to answer questions.

“With any audition or interview it is important to see how the person interacts with others. You want to see his or her personality, enthusiasm and the response that the candidate gets back as he or she relates to the students as a conductor,” he said.

Brozak has less experience than the first two candidates, Robert Foster and Matthew Smith, who have both held similar positions at the University of Kansas and Baylor University, respectively.

“Through the tape Brozak sent in, the work that he’s done and his letters of reference we saw a spark – something that said this person is special,” Schilling said.

A decision will be announced this week.
