Graduating students to have their names read in ceremony

For the first time since 1987, ISU undergraduates will have their names read and will cross the stage at Hilton Coliseum during the university-wide commencement ceremony.

“This school year’s graduation ceremony has changed dramatically,” said Susan Maysent, records analyst in the graduation office.

In previous years the students haven’t been recognized individually at the university-wide commencement ceremony. Instead the students stood up to be recognized as a college. There are a few other minor changes in the ceremony as well.

“Each college has an undergraduate student that carries a banner with the college’s name on it,” she said.

This year the Brass Ensemble will also be playing. In past years, there was organ music.

Commencement for the 2,422 undergraduates will begin at 2 p.m. and end at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. The graduation office recommends arriving around 1 p.m.

The Graduate College’s commencement ceremony for 353 students is 8 p.m. on Friday in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. The ceremony will be about an hour and a half long. Students should plan on arriving by 7:15 p.m.

President Gregory Geoffroy will be speaking at both ceremonies.

Caps and gowns are required and can be purchased or rented. Tickets are not required.

Photographs are allowed throughout both ceremonies. Jolesch Photography will be taking photos of the graduates as they cross the stage and shake hands with the president or provost. Free proofs of the photos will be mailed with the option to order more.

Diplomas will be mailed on May 28.

A brunch will be served for all colleges from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Maple-Willow-Larch Dining Hall. Tickets can be purchased from the Student Alumni Leadership Council in 158 Memorial Union or by calling 294-8488.
