Pookey Bleum returns for downtown show

Pookey Bleum, a popular local group that disbanded in December of last year, will be coming out of retirenment next week for a show at the Ames Downtown Farmers’ Market, of all places.

Patrick Fleming, the group’s highly energetic guitar player, claims that the group has been itching to play for quite some time now. Pookey has had numerous calls about playing in places such as Kansas City, but due to schedule conflicts have not been able to make the committment. So Fleming jumped at the offer to play Monday at the farmers’ market.

“They called up and [guitarist/singer] Aaron has really been wanting to play a lot, so I said `sure’ without even asking anyone else in the group,” Fleming says. “It might not even be a full Pookey show, – I’m not sure – but we’re going to have fun.”

Monday is the market’s grand opening and Pookey Bleum will perform that afternoon. The market is held at 300 Main St. and is open from 2 to 6 p.m.

Classical music to be featured on KURE

Following a year-long absence, classical music will be back on the schedule of KURE. Paul Kogerler, who is currently a postdoctorate researcher at Ames Laboratory, will host the show and says that it will feature classical music ranging from medireview to contemporary.

Kogerler decided to start the show mainly to provide an alternative to some of the other classical programs featured on other stations.

“First of all I want to give people an alternative to existing programs and give them some background info on classical music,” Kogerler says.

Kogerler says the idea for the show came along when colleagues of his expressed that they were not happy with the classical music options available to them on the radio. So for Kogerler, it wasn’t a matter of interest, just taking care of the technicalities.

“Condensed Matter” is the name of the program and will have its initial airing Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

Snoop fined for drug possession

Tuesday, Snoop, a.k.a. Calvin Broadus, pleaded no contest in Ohio’s Oberlin Municipal Court to possession of marijuana, and was fined $250 plus court costs. The court suspended the usual 30-day stay in jail provided Snoop stays out of trouble for the next two years.

The rapper was busted last October when two of his tour buses were pulled over by the Ohio State Patrol for speeding near Cleveland. Officers who boarded the bus smelled marijuana, and a search revealed 200 grams of the drug.

Wes says no to Fred’s pleas

Three days after asking Limp Bizkit fans to e-mail ex-guitarist Wes Borland to encourage him rejoin the rap-rock band, red-capped Fred Durst reported on the band’s Web site Monday that Borland “has received your e-mails and has responded negatively.”

Borland left Limp Bizkit last October after seven years and three albums. He has since turned his attention to his onetime side project, “Big Dumb Face.”
