LETTER:LAS cancelation both good and bad

Jeff Greiner

I keep seeing feedback from people who just hate the way the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has decided to cancel their graduation ceremony. I wanted to make two points on this issue.

First off, is the decision a good one? Yes. Although I would say that a better option would be to cancel the all-university ceremony – but that just doesn’t seem to be a realistic goal right now – the next best alternative is to cancel the college event which has been made to be obsolete by the all-university event. In a time when money is tight, you don’t do the same thing twice. So for that decision, good job LAS, and congrats to you.

Second, was the decision made, and were people informed in the best way? No.

I have yet to speak with a single member of the college of LAS who had received the e-mail. If there is someone out there who did, please write in to the Daily and say differently; but I’m wondering if anyone got it or that the message went out. And if what other people have said about the lack of concern for student feedback is true then the administrators need to take a major lesson from some other leaders on campus, ones who communicate with students, thus demonstrating that they realize their careers are dependent on the students they work for.

To sum it up, the decision was good, the way the decision was made and the way that people were informed was horrible.
