EDITORIAL:It’s in the bylaws .
April 8, 2002
IRHA thought they had a new president last week. Keith Twombley and Jessi Raim were told they were the new IRHA executives, and likely went out to celebrate. But then, IRHA Vice President and Election Commissioner David Boike realized that, in actuality, no one had won the election.
Oops.
After reviewing the bylaws – after the election, mind you – Boike determined that the winning slate must receive 51 percent of the votes to be elected. Too bad for Twombley and Raim – the just didn’t have it. If only Boike – the election commissioner, mind you – had known this ahead of time.
Let’s recap here. The ELECTION COMMISSIONER did not know the bylaws regarding the ELECTION.
“I just hope I can get a hold of everyone before the news is printed,” Boike told the Daily the night of the election. Well, thank goodness he had that covered.
Coming off the success of the Veishea compromises with the department of residence, IRHA couldn’t look more foolish.
Things happen. Run-off elections are a common occurrence. But what is embarrassing is that Boike did not know the rules before announcing the initial winner.
