LETTER:Nothing says `thank you’ quite like a lawsuit
April 28, 2002
After seniors graduate from a high school or college, it is not uncommon for the individual to give back to the community that was so good to them. Apparently this is not the case for 2001 graduate Daniel Blumhagen. Instead of contributing back to the community, he is attempting to rob it by filing a lawsuit against the city of Ames and USA Hockey, Inc.
Blumhagen is suing the city for an injury to his face that he received while attending an ISU men’s hockey game. Blumhagen stated Friday in the Daily, “I didn’t even know it was coming until it hit me in the face.” Now I don’t mean to be rude – wait let me rephrase that, I do mean to be rude – Daniel Blumhagen needs to pull his head out instead of making the city of Ames pull its checkbook out. Blumhagen needs to realize that occasionally hockey pucks do fly into the stands, but if you are paying attention then you can increase your chances of avoiding injury and embarrassment.
Yes, embarrassment. I would be truly embarrassed if I was Daniel Blumhagen. His statement in the Daily proves that he did not know what was happening and all of a sudden a puck hit him in the face. Pay attention when you go to watch a hockey game; after all that is what you are there for. Don’t blame the city of Ames and hockey for your own lack of intelligence or attention span. Look yourself in the mirror, admit that you made a mistake and take your anger out on yourself, not Ames. Mr. Blumhagen, do not take away from a community that gave you so many opportunities.
