Week celebrates all that is greek

An annual celebration of greek life at Iowa State will feature lip-syncs, late-night swims and intramural sports.

Many events – which will benefit organizations such as the Hospice House, the Special Olympics and St. Jude’s Hospital – are planned for this year’s Greek Week.

The official start of the celebration is Monday at 6:30 p.m. when Vespers, an awards ceremony, will be held at Stephens Auditorium.

The formal event honors members of the greek community demonstrating high scholarship and citizenship standards.

Greek intramural tournaments will be held throughout the week, including flag football, billiards, wallyball and bowling. The tournaments are open to any greek member willing to raise money, said Rachel Betts, marketing and media coordinator for Greek Week.

“Greek members will additionally be collecting Campbell’s soup labels for charity, and there will be a lot of fun events to participate in,” said Missy Berg, marketing and media coordinator for Greek Week.

First cuts of Greek Lip-Sync will be Tuesday; every house from the university will be participating. The participants will be performing a three-song medley dressed as their favorite artists.

Greek Getaway begins Friday, giving high school seniors the opportunity to experience the greek system first-hand.

“It’s a great experience for them, as it gives them a taste of campus life,” said Betts, senior in marketing. “Greek Week in general is a celebration of being greek and helping others in need.”

Polar Bear Plunge will be Saturday, allowing the greek members who raise $50 for the Special Olympics to jump into Lake LaVerne.

Greek Week officials also organized the blood drive in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on March 4-8.

“For an early beginning, the blood drive was extremely successful,” Betts said. “All in all, the members of the greek system have a very busy, but fun week ahead of them.
