LETTER:Gilbert school board representing voters
April 14, 2002
As a Gilbert High School alum, I feel like sharing my two cents. With Gilbert being such a small school, I have the pleasure of knowing many of the administrators and board members personally, if not their children. You have to remember that the board members are elected officials and represent their constituents. They were elected with their constituents knowing their moral and ethical backgrounds. Knowing the people of the Gilbert School District, you would be hard pressed to find a majority in favor of sexual orientation changes to the non-discrimination and harassment policy.
Do the members of the school board have a moral dilemma with homosexuality? Probably, if not most likely. I also have a moral opposition to homosexuality. Don’t get me wrong, I also have a problem with discrimination of any kind; vegetarian or carnivore, righty or southpaw, gay or straight, engineer or journalist. I also believe the school board probably feels the same.
The board is representing their taxpaying voters and are voting the way their constituents would want them to. Whether or not a change is warranted is hard for me to say, but it probably won’t happen until the state board of education makes it happen. One last thing for all who wish to discriminate, vandalize, or anything else: You can’t convince someone that they are doing something wrong until you can prove you are right with your character and actions.
