Stepping into another’s skin

A new interactive exhibit allows viewers to see what they would look like if they were another race or age. Participants sit inside a machine, called the “Human Race Machine,” which makes digital images of their faces. The machine mixes that image with composites of people of other ethnicities and spits out a photo.

The machine is part of a traveling exhibit by Nancy Burson. The artist said the machine is “a prayer for unity . it’s about seeing through our differences to sameness, it’s like stepping into someone else’s skin.”

The “Human Race Machine,” which is part of Burson’s larger exhibit, “Seeing and Believing: The Art of Nancy Burson,” is currently on display at the Grey Art Gallery in Greenwich Village. From there it will travel to Texas and North Carolina.
