Take Back the Night to rally for victims
April 16, 2002
At least one night this month will belong to victims of sexual assault.
To pay respect to victims of sexual assault, as well as to make the world safer for women, the Ames YWCA is hosting the annual Take Back the Night rally and march.
The rally and march against sexual assault and violence will begin on the Memorial Union Terrace with a march through Campustown and the greek neighborhood following. The march will end at Lake LaVerne, where candles will be set afloat in remembrance of sexual assault victims who didn’t survive.
The rally will feature four speakers, including a sexual assault survivor.
Leticia Romo, co-chairwoman for Take Back the Night, said organizing the event has taught her how common sexual assault is.
“Just looking at statistics will make you realize just how dangerous the world can be for women,” said Romo, junior in management. “The speaker that survived sexual assault is really young and it makes you realize that the next time it could be you.”
Judy Dolphin, YWCA executive director, has two main goals for Take Back the Night this year.
“My first goal is to bring people of all ages, races and sexes together to stand up and say that women should be safe in all places,” she said.
“I also want to help raise awareness so people realize that this happens more than they think.
“My second goal is to show women who have been assaulted that they have people who care about them and who will show them support, and of course to pay respects to those who didn’t survive sexual assault.”
The march will begin at the Memorial Union Terrace at 7 p.m.
“We need to join in solidarity and show women that we want them to be safe,” Dolphin said.
