IRHA rules change for weekend
April 16, 2002
Students who live in residence halls can look forward to more lenient rules during Veishea weekend.
Members of the Inter-Residence Hall Association have been working with Randy Alexander, director of the Department of Residence, to change some policies that have been in place since Veishea went dry in the residence halls.
The meetings over the changes went well and everyone is happy with the results,” said Kate Bruns, communications specialist for the Department of Residence.
Three major changes will be put in place this year, Bruns said. They include: Residence assistants will do their normal weekend rounds instead of the extra rounds that they’ve done in the past; exterior doors will still be locked as usual, but interior doors will remain unlocked; and residents will get passes at the hall desk or from RAs for their guests instead of signing them in.
“The guest passes will be on cards,” said Paul Duncan, IRHA president and senior in transportation and logistics. “The first side will be a list of events and the other side will list the rules.”
The new method is expected to go well. The Department of Residence isn’t worried about the number of guests during Veishea, they just want someone responsible for them, said Jennie Kingery, RCA president.
The host’s name will be on guest cards, so the host is ultimately going to be held responsible if a guest is breaking rules.
“Most of the residents I’ve talked to like the new policy a lot,” said Kingery, senior in biology. “I’m glad we got these changes made.”
The only people that are unsure about the new guest policy are hall desk workers, because they will no longer have a guest list, Kingery said.
Kingery thinks the list made people feel like they were being watched and is glad to be rid of it.
“Most people [IRHA has] talked to have been very excited and very pumped up for Veishea this year,” Duncan said. “The new policy makes people more comfortable in staying here.”
