LETTER:LAS fails to listen to students’ concerns
April 1, 2002
I am not surprised that there are so many complaints surfacing about the LAS graduation ceremony being canceled. It is obvious that graduating LAS seniors did not receive the e-mail that was supposedly sent by David Gieseke.
Did anyone get this e-mail? I have heard from numerous graduating seniors since Monday who did NOT get the e-mail, and who are hurt and disappointed by this decision and the disregard with which it was made.
And despite previous plans to participate in the LAS graduation ceremony, none of these students (myself included) will be participating in the school-wide ceremony.
When I e-mailed Gieseke on Monday to express my disappointment and concern over not getting the e-mail after reading the announcement in the Daily, I was told, “from your e-mail, regardless of when you received the notification of the change, you would not have been happy with the decision.”
This implies that even if he had e-mailed every potential LAS graduate as he claims, feedback that did not agree with his choice would have been ignored anyway.
The timing of this decision, it’s impact on arrangements already made, and the disregard for the opinions of those involved are reasons enough to reconsider and keep the LAS ceremony. Cancel the school-wide event if something has to be done.
