`Monster aerobics’ class features variety of exercises

An Ames Parks and Recreation “Monster Aerobics” class offers a chance to try several activities in one workout, and all for free.
The class will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ames Community Center Gymnasium, 515 Clark Ave.
Monster aerobics will feature kickboxing, body sculpting, hi/low aerobics, yoga and various other types of aerobics.
“Anybody who’s interested in fitness and who wants to have fun and see what our program is all about should come and try it,” said Nancy Shaw, public wellness supervisor for the Ames Community Center.
The class is offered two times per year – once in the fall and once in the spring – and has been going for at least five years.
Shaw said approximately 70 to 75 people attended October’s monster aerobics class.
Kara Ranney, fitness instructor for Ames Parks and Recreation, will teach hi/low aerobics at the class.
“Hi/low is dance-based aerobics,” Ranney said.
“People can jump or do low-impact [movements], depending on what feels best for their body,” she said.
Kris Mach, fitness instructor for Ames Parks and Recreation, will teach yoga. She will focus on the cool-down portion of aerobics.
“It’s a great way to try a new class because each instructor is able to demonstrate their [teaching] specialty,” Mach said.
Shaw said the monster aerobics class started as an event to try to do something different and get people outside of Ames Parks and Recreation to participate.
