LETTER:Quirmbach right choice for Senate
April 21, 2002
We have two Democratic candidates for the nomination for the District 23 State Senate seat.
Only one, Herman Quirmbach, has demonstrated a timely and consistent dedication to public service. His record of accomplishments is notable. His education and experience provide him with vast knowledge of government and economics. He has proven leadership qualities and works very well with others to achieve common goals.
Herman Quirmbach has been on the Ames City Council since 1995 and is Mayor Pro-Tem in 2002. He has supported economic development efforts that have helped bring over 600 new jobs to mid-Iowa.
He has actively supported Human Services projects including Youth and Shelter Services, Habitat for Humanity, Affordable Housing Program and other government and community efforts to help those in need.
He has worked well with groups concerned with the environment. He was instrumental in the effort to assure a clean water supply through the purchase of Hallett’s Quarry and surrounding area and worked closely with others to clean up College Creek. He has the support of many people, both Democrats and Republicans, men and women who have worked with him on these projects.
Educated at Harvard with a major in government, Herman Quirmbach graduated with honors.
He obtained a doctorate degree in economics from Princeton University. Herman spent 2 years teaching high school, has been a college teacher for 20 years, teaching economics at Iowa State for the past 12 years. He also spent time as a Social Security claim representative.
Herman Quirmbach’s dedicated community service spans many years. He served on the Story County REAP Committee, is a graduate of Leadership Ames, member of Kiwanis, League of Women Voters and Ames Tobacco Task Force. He has belonged to the Chamber of Commerce Quality Council and is past treasurer for Story County Democrats. He won the Don Biggs Political Leadership Award 1998 – 99.
I have never voted according to the gender of a candidate in an election. Qualifications are of utmost importance to me. Education, experience and knowledge of political process helped convince me that Herman Quirmbach is an outstanding candidate for state senator. I will vote for him and I hope that you will too.
