LETTER:Torn posters an expression as well

Jon Hand

I think some very important issues are being ignored by LGBTAA. The article in Monday’s Daily (“Defaced posters are campus barometer”) says that the group wants to recognize defaced posters as a hate crime.

Disrespectful? Maybe. Criminal? No. Apparently LGBTAA thinks they are the only group allowed to have an opinion. If someone were to post more than 1,000 posters on campus with the opinion “Being Gay is Gross & Wrong,” I bet all of them would get torn down. If you think about it, putting up a poster and taking one down are very similar.

Both are ways of sharing your opinion with others. You say you are disgusted by your posters being torn down. Have you thought that someone took it down because they were disgusted?

Bronwyn Beatty-Hansen said “This is a sort of barometer to the attitude on campus.” How many people did it take to put up 1,000 posters? A dozen or so? Do you think that just possibly about the same number are responsible for taking them down? Even if 100 people took down 10 posters each, let’s see . 100 divided by 25,000 students (round numbers are good) that’s about 0.4 percent.

Here’s my comment to the people with the poster campaign – don’t act surprised by the results of your poster campaign. After all, you did expect them to be torn down.

I respect anyone who stands up for what they believe in, be it putting up posters, adding to them or simply taking them down.
