Energy helps improve environment
April 7, 2002
A local energy company is sponsoring a countywide effort to improve the environment.
Alliant Energy is encouraging its customers to buy a tree at a discount price and plant it.
The program, Operation ReLeaf, is a partnership initiative administered by Story County Conservation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The program has been successful in other counties across Iowa, but is new to this area.
“Alliant Energy started the program last year, but it’s the first time Story County has offered it,” said Ledah Emmons, program support coordinator for Story County Conservation. “Dependent on the success of the program, it may be offered in the fall.”
Three companies provided about 500 trees with retail prices starting at $65. The trees will be sold for only $25 to participating Alliant Energy residential customers.
“[Customers] can purchase a quality tree at an affordable price,” she said.
Mike Christiansen, manager of Earl May Nursery and Garden Center, said his business got involved after being asked to help by the Iowa DNR.
“Selling trees is our business,” Christiansen said. “We’ll not only move product, but it is a great thing to have conservation.”
To buy a tree for the discounted price, customers must fill out an application form by April 10.
The forms are available at libraries and city halls around Story County, the Ames Parks and Recreation Department and the Story County Conservation Board office, 56461 180th Street.
Participants can pick up their trees at McFarland Park Saturday, April 13.
Emmons said the program is getting a lot of support.
“We’ve gotten a positive response from the public and lots of people are very interested,” Emmons said. “We encourage people to come and even bring their neighbors.”
Trees for the program were provided by Vic Scott Landscaping, Ankeny; Country Landscapes, 56985 Lincoln Highway; and Earl May Nursery and Garden Center, 1601 S. Kellogg Ave.
