Car crash knocks out power to street lights

Street lights were out for several hours Friday after an ISU student crashed into a light pole on Sunset Drive.

The two ISU students in the vehicle said they believe they hit a slick portion of the road and slid into a light pole. April Lahman, sophomore in pre-architecture, and Sandra Hintz, freshman in preparation for law, were both taken to the emergency room at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

“All I remember is waving to my friend and then waking up in the emergency room,” Hintz said.

Several utility cords were down for hours after the accident, but city officials replaced them later Friday evening. Hintz was transferred to the hospital where she was treated for two cracked ribs, sprained wrists and bruised knees. She was released that night.

“I was hit pretty hard by the airbags,” Hintz said. “I thought my nose was broken. I was in and out of consciousness.”

Hintz said Lahman suffered whiplash and was shaken by the accident.

Lahman, who was driving the vehicle, declined to comment.

Ames police officer Jeff Barnes said both girls were wearing seatbelts and the airbags on the driver and passenger side were released.

“Luckily they had airbags,” Barnes said. “They help wonders.”

The 1997 Saturn is not totaled, but damaged is estimated at $8,000 and will be covered by insurance.

Lahman was cited for failure to maintain control and will go to court March 15 for a fine assessment by a judge.

Replacing the damaged light pole cost $200, and labor is estimated at approximately $1,800. Lahman will pay $200 for the repairs, and her insurance will pay the remainder of the cost.
