LETTER:No Lexus for this greek member II

Matt Baird

This letter is in response to Jess Eide’s letter to the Daily (“Greeks should use their father’s money wisely,” Feb. 27). To start, stereotypes hurt all that are involved in them. Stereotypes are notorious for making false impressions toward a particular group. However, they are not notorious for making the party saying them look unintelligent.

I see this happening both ways at Iowa State. I see people living in the dorms or off campus saying stereotypical comments about greeks. I also see greeks making stereotypical comments about those who live in dorms or off campus. What I believe people fail to see is that both groups look stupid when they do this.

The comment about the residence halls accepting r‚sum‚s written in crayon was funny but in my opinion, uncalled for. I don’t know Twombley personally but I’m sure to have his position you have to be quite gifted and more than qualified. As for the comments by Eide regarding that greeks all drive a Lexus, live in Illinois and are all living off of Daddy’s money, I have first-hand experience that this is as far from the truth as Twombley submitting a r‚sum‚ written in crayon. I am a member of the greek community. I come from a farm in South Dakota and drive a 1984 Buick Riviera. The only Lexus I’ve seen for a while was the one parked in the front window of the Santa Fe Caf‚.

Finally, I would like to add that the movie “Animal House” still hurts the greek community. Honestly, no college student should think that “Animal House” is a good portrayal of greek life. We all know that there are no dead horses in the president’s office nor are there parade floats from the depths of hell. However, people who haven’t been to college are less exposed to these facts. I’m not saying they are stupid, some just don’t know any better. Even if it’s only one person, that’s one more person who will probably go to college some day and write to the Daily’s editorial page and say all greeks are from Illinois and drive a Lexus that Daddy bought for them.
