Spring fitness courses start on Monday

Beginning Monday, students interested in fun and physical fitness can sign up for spring fitness courses from the Ames Park and Recreation Department.

“We are offering a wide variety of fitness classes,” said Nancy Shaw, Ames Park and Recreation public wellness supervisor.

“We have classes such as high- and low-step aerobics, aerobic kickboxing, water aerobics and weight training.”

Classes start as early as 6 a.m. and end as late as 6:30 p.m.

“There are lots of available times on days, nights and weekend,” Shaw said.

Kara Ranney, fitness instructor for Ames Park and Recreation, said students do participate in the programs, but time of day is a factor in how many attend.

“There are a few Iowa State students in the evening classes, more than in the morning,” Ranney said.

Shaw said classes are held at the Ames Community Center and that even those without a car could make the trip.

“CyRide delivers you right to the front door,” she said.

While there is a cost associated with the classes, Shaw said the courses are still less than the costs of joining a health club.

“There is no initiation fee, only the cost of classes,” Shaw said.

One nine-class week is $24; enrolling in two courses costs $47 and taking three courses costs $63.

“We have very qualified and experienced instructors, a great facility and different availability times,” Shaw said.

Shaw said the courses are offered in a social setting.

“It’s a really fun environment and a fun way to exercise,” she said.
