Foundation looking for students to be on committee

The ISU Foundation is currently looking to fill positions on its Student Committee.

Nate Brinkley, chairman for the ISU Student Foundation Committee, has been a member of the group for more than two years. He said the group works a lot with the Foundation and is “looking to grow” in the future.

Students on the 11-member committee play an active role in foundation-sponsored events, such as dedications, groundbreakings and football tailgates. Committee members also attend regular meetings and participate in activities such as campus tours for visiting donors.

The group is looking forward to getting more involved in the actual fund raising process, said Brinkley, senior in exercise and sport science.

The committee will likely become a liaison group between the student body and the Foundation.

“We want to get an understanding out to students about how the Foundation benefits them,” Brinkley said. “The Foundation is not out to sell farms or do anything illegal. Last year 3,500 students got [a total of] $7 million in scholarships that the Foundation helped to raise.”

Barbara Boose, director of communication for the ISU Foundation, said the student committee began as a subcommittee of the Student Alumni Leadership Council in the early 1990s, but is now a separate group.

The Foundation is seeking students from all areas and all walks of life who are interested in philanthropy, Boose said.

Brinkley said the student committee is comprised of a good balance of students, with equal greek and nongreek representation.

Students serve for one academic year, from August to May. For fall, the committee is anticipating a 12-member board.

Applications are due March 14 and are currently available from the ISU Foundation/Alumni Association office in the Memorial Union, or the University Honors Program, located in Pearson Hall.

The application form includes a detailed job description, a list of favorable attributes and a brief training schedule. Applications should be returned to the ISU Foundation office.

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be scheduled in late March. Selected applicants will be notified April 5.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Angie Joens, director of donor relations at the Foundation, at 294-6559.
