LETTER:Multicultural center the best option
March 14, 2002
What better way to restore Morrill Hall to historic glory than to make it a multicultural center? The whole idea behind what Morrill believed was to bring college to the masses. And what is more multicultural at Iowa State than the masses?
The Daily reported that it would cost in excess of $300 per square foot to renovate Morrill. What better testament to the masses at Iowa State than a fund-raising campaign allowing individuals to donate toward the renovation by the square foot? Too expensive? In my experience, when people put their mind to something, no project is too expensive. I have seen small churches put large accessible elevators in their buildings, paying off the debt in three years all by the faith of those believing it is a great idea. I have seen, through Habitat for Humanity, buildings go up in a week. With the attitude we see in our administration of action and doing the right thing for this campus to be one we can be proud of, nothing is impossible.
And to have a multicultural center in the middle of campus where many students congregate is not only an excellent idea, but lends to the overall pride we can further establish in this university. Yes, ripping the building down would be cheaper but having many put money into the restoration of history and being able to say they had a hand in it would bring much more pride.
The masses are what this building was built for. The masses can make it a building restored to it’s former glory. I am all for it.
