LETTER:Greek debate not important now
March 1, 2002
In response to his letter (“Greeks should use their fathers’ money wisely”, Feb. 27), I would like to congratulate Mr. Eide for not only alienating nearly 15 percent of the Iowa State University student body, but also on speaking what he mistakenly perceives to be the feelings of nongreek students.
I could take this opportunity to go on a rant about how I feel Mr. Eide is an idiot for feeling this or that, but I’m not going to waste anyone’s time doing this. He’s already proven himself to be that through his words. I could also take this opportunity to give dozens of examples to disprove Eide’s radical stereotypes. But I’m not going to insult anyone’s intelligence by doing so. I know that whoever read his letter knows the things he said were simply untrue.
What I will say is this – after having experienced both greek and nongreek housing, I feel the rift between dorm life and greek life has been blown, almost comically out of proportion. It seems that once every semester, without fail, we have a few zealots on both sides practically waging war against each other over petty things that ultimately have no real bearing on anyone’s lives. In this case it’s a movie. Frankly, I find it sad and disappointing that a few random people can divide an entire community of educated people. For once, can we skip the childish remarks from greeks and non-greeks? As Iowa State students, we have larger concerns, such as the loss of faculty and sky-high tuition.
