Pan-Hellenic president seeks greek cooperation
March 5, 2002
The president of Iowa State’s National Pan-Hellenic Council is keeping busy this semester promoting unity on campus.
The council is a governing body of members from Iowa State’s six historically black fraternities and sororities. Council President La’Tifini McClinton, junior in community health education, said she wants to work with her new cabinet to form more collaboration with Iowa State’s Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council.
McClinton served as interim president last semester and is already acquatinted with her position, she said. She is the official spokesperson for the organization and works to maintain unity between Iowa State’s historically black greek chapters.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council’s theme for the semester is “There are no gray areas,” which McClinton said fits her personality.
“There are so many goals. I don’t want to leave anything undone,” she said.
McClinton, as well as other members of the council, recently returned form the National Pan-Hellenic Council Big 12 Conference. There, attendees went to workshops focusing on the ideas and principles of the group’s founders.
“It was a great experience . and a good opportunity to talk with other [National Pan-Hellenic Council] officers and see what they are doing at their schools,” McClinton said.
Academics are the group’s primary focus, she said. The council is working on a community-wide study table.
She said she would also like to see the National Pan-Hellenic Council working with the other greek chapters on campus. McClinton said she looks forward to working with them.
“In collective we can be so much stronger,” she said.
McClinton’s leadership has already brought pro-active involvement to the organization. This will be the first year the National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters will be involved with the Greek Week Council.
Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs, said he is impressed with McClinton.
“[McClinton] began to work hard and organized to get membership behind the goals and objectives of the organization,” Hill said.
“She came in with high expectations and is striving to get the organization to a higher level to do bigger things on campus.”
McClinton traveled to Chicago to attend the Mid-American Greek Council Association Conference. This was the first time the ISU National Pan-Hellenic Council has sent officers to the conference.
“I never want to feel like I only got something half done,” McClinton said. “I really want to work to get things done.”
