LETTER:No Lexus for this greek member I

Nicholas Clausen

I have been attending Iowa State for almost two years now, and like most college students became broke in those two years. I work for survival to stay at Iowa State. I survive on loans, and they are even worse because I am an out-of-state student. So Jess Eide would say I am a son of a rich Illinois man, but yet I am from a middle-class family from Nebraska. My parents can’t afford to send me to school so I have to take out the loans myself and pay them back myself when I get done.

So when did community service, making life-long friends and being active on campus become such a sin? I don’t feel it is. I enjoy giving back to others, as I do being in a greek house. So why isn’t giving some of your time to others worth while?

I’ll agree that “Animal House” is a great comedy, as long as it isn’t used as a stereotype of life in the greek community. It’s like watching a movie with a kid and telling them “it’s not real, its just a movie.”

Also when looking at the greek community you will find diversity. Everyday I walk with students, greeks and non-greeks, from all kinds of diverse backgrounds. Also, I live with about 50 different guys and not one of them is from Nebraska. I call that diverse.

Not everyone is going to be greek, and many of us understand that. I have many friends that are not greek, and I enjoy hanging out with them as much as I do greeks. One is my girlfriend, and she will never go greek. This gives me the knowledge of the stereotypes out there, and I want to break them.
