LETTER:Actions of looters disappointing
March 8, 2002
I would like to voice my severe disappointment in several members of the Ames and ISU community over the scenario that unfolded on Tuesday at the Celtic Manor apartment complex. The lack of respect for personal property that was displayed was appalling. Since when does the act of being evicted get coupled with personal belongings being declared public domain?
Now, while the Bochik family did have prior notice of the impending eviction, this by no means makes the free-for-all that ensued justifiable. I do not know how people can have clear consciences about robbing these people blind.
I’m sure that Mr. Bradley Holtan truly does feel bad about what happened. I’m sure that his heart will go out to this unfortunate family every time that he sits in his new leather recliner or fires up that new Shop-Vac, neither of which he had to pay a dime for. My only solace lies in the few students, namely Mr. Conrad and Ms. Downs, who chose to take the moral high road and gather up any items they could that might have some sentimental value to the family, in order that they be returned to the proper owner.
I guess you never know who out there might want a family photo album filled with pictures of someone else’s family. Thank you Ames and Iowa State, you’ve all displayed yourselves as a shining example of compassion and goodwill towards your neighbors.
