Softball team wins conference opener
The ISU softball team defeated Texas Tech, 5-2 Sunday in Lubbock, Texas to win its first conference game of the season.
Iowa State improved its record to 10-8 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference.
Erica Martinez allowed one run on two hits while fanning seven in 3 2/3 innings of work to get the win for the Cyclones.
The victory improved her record to 5-4 on the season. Martinez also added two hits for the Cyclones who were led by pinch hitter Kelly Wardein and Julia Lindsey who both had two runs-batted-in.

Gymnasts garner academic honors
Four ISU gymnasts were named to the 2002 Women’s Gymnastics Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
Kendra Ciancio, Sissy Huey, Karen Kuplicki and Courtney Sarrett were all named to the team.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12 First Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 grade-point-average and must have participated in 60 percent of the team’s scheduled meets.

Greibel takes first in South Dakota
Three Cyclone throwers traveled to South Carolina to open the 2002 outdoor track and field season and came home with some first place finishes.
Senior Lisa Griebel and sophomores Susan Sherman and Rocky Moore represented the Cyclones at the Weems Baskin Invitational held at the University of South Carolina’s Weems Baskin Track Complex Friday and Saturday.
Lisa Griebel placed first in the shot put with a throw of 51-9.
Sherman placed fourth, fifth and sixth in the shot put (43-4 1/2), hammer throw (151-9) and discus throw (138-1).
Moore, the only male representative from Iowa State, placed first in both the shot put and the discus throw.
He threw a personal-best 56-8 in the shot put and threw a length of 156-10 in his first-ever discus competition.
