LETTER:Daily just doing its job covering Partridge story
February 8, 2002
Someone in ISU athletics does something wrong, the Daily reports it, and members of the Cyclone sports community rush to denounce the Daily as irresponsible and lacking in integrity. But former football player Ben Bruns, staff member Jim Nespor and the rest of the Athletic Department should be thanking the Daily for doing exactly what it was supposed to do. By all accounts, Charlie Partridge is a good guy who made a simple mistake. He probably didn’t mean to misrepresent himself, and he probably just overlooked the inaccurate information about him in the media guide. But that’s certainly not always the case. Just ask Notre Dame. Or Kerry Miller.
The Daily exists to keep a watchful eye on the powers that be. Students work tirelessly on this newspaper to keep Iowa State informed, to unearth corruption and to shed light on campus problems. Without the Daily, there would be nothing to keep ISU administrators on their toes. And no one wants that.
From now on, the Athletic Department will be more careful about what degrees it says its employees have earned. And current or prospective Athletic Department employees will think twice before fabricating information about themselves.
They will be more responsible, and they will act with more integrity. What could be better for Cyclone sports?
