Cyclone tennis gets weekend split
February 5, 2002
The ISU women’s tennis team is in full swing after splitting a pair of matches.
The Cyclones lost to Minnesota Friday 6-1, but got a solid performance from senior Noortje Cornelissen and sophomore Sabrina Evers in the No. 1 doubles match.
Cornelissen and Evers dominated their opponents winning 8-0. In singles, Iowa State senior Edna Vazquez battled Jennifer Howard in the No. 2 spot to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Despite the loss to Minnesota, junior Kristin Gyaki said the experience was good for the team.
“Friday’s match was tough, but it was good competition that will get us ready for the Big 12,” she said.
Saturday the Cyclones were able to overcome Friday’s loss and control the match against St. Louis, winning 6-1.
For the second straight day, Cornelissen and Evers won the No. 1 doubles match 8-0. Iowa State sealed the doubles point when Vazquez and Courtney Leese picked up the win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Cyclones continued to dominate winning five of the six singles matches. Ebers fought back from a 4-6 deficit in the first set to win the No. 1 singles match 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
There was a brief discrepancy over a ball that Eber’s opponent called out at the end of the first set.
“She called a ball out that was in, and she won the set,” Ebers said. “That made me mad, but I stayed calm and won the match.”
Cornelissen, Vazquez, Leese and Sharla Whitakeer all won their singles matches to secure the win for the Cyclones.
“Everyone came out really strong and stayed tough through the entire match,” Gyaki said.
The Cyclones are hoping to move up in the Big 12 this year and gain a national ranking, but head coach Michele Conlon said it’s not what the team is focused on right now.
“You can set your sights up high, but what we focus in on more are the things that we can control, such as playing with more self confidence and keeping team cohesion,” she said.
Iowa State will try to improve on its 1-1 record when the Cyclones host Gustavus Adolphus at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
