Library copiers to use ISUCard

Remembering to bring a copy card to Parks Library has been a nuisance throughout the years for students, so library officials have decided to use the ISUCard as a copy card instead.

Starting July 1, library photocopiers will stop accepting the current copy cards and accept only the ISUCard. The plan has been in the works since December, said David Gregory, associate director for public services and collections.

“It’s more secure, and people only need to carry one card, which was the plan all along,” he said. “This actually falls in with the intent of the ISUCard as a multipurpose ID card that can be used for identification, financial transactions and access.”

Since the plan won’t be started until this summer, library officials feel that users will have enough time to adjust to the change.

“We wanted to get the announcement out to the library users,” Gregory said. “We’re making sure there’s sufficient time and a reasonably large opportunity to transfer.”

Remaining balances on old cards are nonrefundable, but for balances more than $20, transfers are possible. The deadline for transfers is May 10, according to the Parks Library’s Web site, For those with less than that, using up the amount is suggested.

The old copy cards held all the financial data on them and was usable by anyone who had the card. The new system will rely on a separate account that is accessed by using the ISUCard.

In the past, if the old card was lost, so was the balance. Under the new system, if the card is lost, the owner can call in and have the value secured, allowing the balance to be maintained while the card is replaced, said Treasurer Joan Thompson.

“As long as you call in right away, it should be safe,” she said.

Adding card value online is another added feature of the new system, Thompson said.

The changeover in the library’s card system also is paired with replacing the photocopy machines, to make the current ISUCards compatible with the new charging system, Gregory said.

“People do not have to be recarded,” he said. “People were concerned and that’s why we introduced this option. The drawback is the required staff time, both here and with the Treasurer’s Office.”

All the details aren’t worked out yet, but both Gregory and Thompson said more announcements would come around the end of February. The library’s Web site will have the most current information on the changeover.

“The details will be forthcoming,” Thompson said.
