LETTER:KURE supposed to be an alternative
February 15, 2002
We would like to respond to Jason Hough’s Feb. 13 letter. Hough stated, “the music they play does not represent what the majority of average trendy college students listen to.”
It may not represent what the majority wants to hear but there is a definite audience for the music the KURE plays. Hough also states that KURE needs to play more of what you might hear on a corporate radio station, only a wider variety of that kind of music.
Des Moines area radio stations such as Lazer 103.3 and Channel Q 105.1 exist to play “corporate music.”
The whole point of KURE is that it offers an alternative to these types of radio stations. KURE plays music that students otherwise wouldn’t get to hear. If you like that kind of music, great, listen to KURE. If you don’t, there are plenty of other options such as the already mentioned Des Moines “corporate” stations.
Furthermore, we take umbrage with the statement, “Right now, there is a lot of crap played on KURE 88.5.” You might not like the music played on KURE, but that definitely doesn’t make it “crap.”
There are a lot of people who do like the music on KURE and work very, very hard to bring it to the students of Iowa State.
KURE offers a wide variety of music – everything from indie rock to Indian sitar music. Give KURE a chance, you might not like everything but you will find something that interests you.
Hough states, “After all, if no one is listening, what’s the point?” We get callers every radio show either making requests or asking for the title of a song they liked.
We have had a radio show for four years and we feel that KURE is a fabulous way for students to appreciate the wonderful diversity of music.
