Cyclones protect home court, coach

The ISU men’s basketball team ended its eight-game losing streak in dominating fashion Wednesday night scoring its highest point total of the season in an 89-63 victory.

Sophomore Jake Sullivan led the Cyclones with 27 points shooting six of 11 from behind the arc, and senior Tyray Pearson added 23.

“On any given night, we can do things like this, we just have to put together a complete game for 40 minutes,” Pearson said. “I thought we came out in the second half and played the same type of ball we played in the first half, that was one of our goals.”

The Cyclones took control early with multiple three-point baskets from Sullivan and sophomore Shane Power, who had 15 points. The team shot nearly 59 percent from the field in the first half.

Starting freshman point guard Ricky Morgan dished out seven assists and broke the defense down to allow Sullivan open shots.

“I told him after the game, it felt like playing with Jamaal [Tinsley] out there tonight, and I really meant that,” Sullivan said. “Maybe he’s not as flashy and he doesn’t put up 15 on the board, but his point guard play reminded me a lot.”

The victory moved head coach Larry Eustachy past Tim Floyd into fourth place on the all-time win list at Iowa State.

“It’s kind of new to me to have a win, I’m not sure how to react,” Eustachy said.

With only two minutes gone by in the second half, an altercation broke out after words shared between Eustachy and Colorado senior D.J. Harrison turned physical.

“Things just got heated, it was just another battle in the Big 12,” Sullivan said. “It was nothing personal, we have a lot of respect for them, they have a lot of respect for us.”

As Harrison moved toward Eustachy, Cyclone freshman Jared Homan left the bench to protect his coach. Colorado was hit with two technical fouls and Homan was ejected.

“I’m just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard,” Eustachy joked. “If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, he’ll be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.”

The Buffaloes were led by Stephane Pelle who had 17 points and freshman David Harrison who added 16.

ISU junior Omar Bynum scored 14 points, going seven-of-seven from the field and grabbing nine rebounds.

“That’s as good as we’ve played, I’m really proud of our guys,” Eustachy said.

“Not a lot of teams lose eight straight and come back and respond like that. I think we executed the best we have all year.”
