LETTER:Corporate radio just as crappy as KURE
February 15, 2002
I have to preface this letter by admitting that, contrary to some of the statements I make, my opinions are my own and not necessarily those of everyone at KURE.
Sometimes, I wonder if people actually pay attention to what they say when they criticize something, because often, the answers to their criticisms are right in front of them. Case in point: Jason Hough’s letter. In his rant against the evil of KURE, he quite effectively displayed a) why we didn’t hire him, and b) why college radio exists in the first place.
You have to wonder what kind of person would criticize a radio station for playing music from “no-name bands,” stuff that apparently “no one wants to hear except the DJ . playing it.” I know I wondered until I got to the end of the letter and noted with a chuckle that Mr. Hough is a business major.
College radio is anathema to anyone with a mind for business, because it’s not about money. It’s about love. Every person who works at KURE does so because they love music and are fed up with the music businessmen try to shove down people’s throats.
And we’re proud of what we do, so much so that it amazes us when people say that we don’t play corporate music and expect us to take it as an insult. We know a lot of people don’t listen to our music, because a lot of people don’t love music like we do. They like it easily digestible, bland, and unoriginal, which is why they listen to corporate stations in the first place.
And, you know what? More power to them, and Mr. Hough, for making their own musical choices, because that’s what we want them to do. That means they think about what they listen to.
So, Jason, listen to your music, because I’m sure a lot of other people do. But, in the meantime, at KURE, we’ll continue to do our thing, and play music from people like Lamb of God, the 90 Day Men, Stella Marie, the Microphones, Frankenixon, the X-ecutioners, DJ Krush, Puffy Amiyumi, Zeni Geva, Hex Error, Fugazi, Pavement, Smog, the Avalanches, Converge, Lanterna, the Mountain Goats and all the countless other crappy no-name bands we play every day.
Because, if no one is listening, then we have to, because we think that corporate radio is just as crappy as a lot of people think KURE is.
