LETTER:Hauser needs to be commended
February 18, 2002
I would just like to say that I support Hauser’s decision to fire the three editors. While it is an unfortunate situation for all involved, college is practice for the real world. In the real world, if you compromise the integrity of your place of work, whether it is in a comedic way or not, you will be punished.
The punishment in this case may seem a bit harsh but as journalists there are many rules that you must follow. The ethics of journalism can be very complicated, but these three women were juniors and seniors, and had most likely taken a journalism ethics class during their enrollment at Iowa State.
Hauser, too, is still a student here. This had to have been a tough decision. While these three may have been talented and qualified for their positions, they messed up. These editors are only a year or two away from being in the real world themselves. It is time for them to act like it and admit their wrongdoing. It is not Hauser’s job to baby-sit the editors.
In high school, a situation such as this may have deserved a slap on the wrist but when you go to college you are no longer considered a child. You are growing up, learning from your mistakes. Maybe these three editors need to grow up and learn from their mistakes and remember that Hauser did what she had to do. They brought this harm on themselves by posing for Toons.
Around campus, you hear that Toons is not to be taken seriously, that it is not unusual for it to use this advertising space to poke fun at others. Maybe this time they took it too far. If it is such a well-known fact that Toons is not to be taken seriously, maybe these three editors should have considered what might be printed before the picture was taken.
The advertisement ended with the claim that the Daily did not need any more money. This advertisement told Ames businesses not to advertise with the Daily. Due to this, the advertising department with the Daily has to do major damage control.
I know people who work for the Daily. I think it needs to be known that most of them are unlike the three former editors. Most of them are able to control themselves and know the difference between right and wrong.
Hauser needs to be commended for taking her time, talking to professors in the journalism field and making a tough decision. While everyone may not agree with what she did, she needs to be supported not only as the editor, but also as a decision maker and as a student.
