LETTER:Taking oneself a little too seriously
February 12, 2002
As an avid reader of both the Daily and Toons, I was very disappointed to see the Feb. 11 front page article about the firing of three Daily editors. While I acknowledge that student journalists must sometimes struggle for legitimacy, this situation seems an example of taking oneself far too seriously.
Further, I felt insulted that the Daily presumed its readers so humorless and obtuse as to miss the lighthearted humor of the Toons advertisement. Any regular reader of Toons will recognize the flagrant make-believe of those regular ads as silliness and parody. It is a shame that the Daily is willing to thwart the liberties of its staff in the name of supposed “integrity” and “seriousness.”
Surely there are better ways to gain respect in the eyes of the community and preserve the effective working relationships of the editorial staff.
