Players charged in assault

Two ISU football players were suspended from the team after being charged with sexual assault Tuesday morning.
Brent R. Nash, 20, 7370 Larch Hall, and Royce A. Hooks, 20, 320 Hillcrest Ave. #18, are accused of assaulting an 18-year-old woman and could face up to 25 years in prison. Both men have been charged with second-degree sexual abuse, a class B felony.
Sgt. Mike Johns, Ames Police Department, could not confirm whether the victim is an ISU student.
Nash, sophomore in liberal arts and sciences, and Hooks, junior in exercise and sport science, are suspected of sexually assaulting the woman while “being aided or abetted by the other,” according to a report from the Ames Police Department. It said the assault occurred Jan. 26 at 4701 Steinbeck Ave.
The investigation is continuing but no more arrests are expected, Johns said.
“We will conduct follow-up interviews with anyone who would have any kind of knowledge about the incident,” he said.
Julie Harders, coordinator for the Story County Sexual Assault Response Team, confirmed that the team aided the victim. SART is a 24-hour response team that provides medical attention, advocacy and legal advice to sexual assault victims.
“Consistent with athletic department policy, Royce Hooks and Brent Nash have been suspended from our football program,” said ISU football head coach Dan McCarney in a statement. “I will have no further comment on this issue, pending its resolution.”
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bruce Van De Velde supported McCarney’s actions.
“The suspensions have been implemented consistent with athletic department guidelines,” he said in a statement. “The issue is under review by legal authorities.”
Hooks, from Jacksonville, Fla., played in three games this season, and Nash, a native of Beverly Hills, Calif., played in five. Both red-shirted their freshman year. They were linebackers for the team.
