LETTER:Stereotypes DO hurt greek reputation
February 22, 2002
Mr. Twombley, I was aghast at your response to Mr. Hurlburt (“Greek complaints a waste of time,” Feb. 20). His objection to your selection of movies, in particular one with a pronounced anti-Greek slant, may not convince you to change your policies, however you at least owe Hurlburt a proper response and basic professional courtesy.
This is obviously of importance to both Hurlburt and myself, and likely of concern to a great many other students (Greek or otherwise).
The Greek community continues to suffer greatly from myths of widespread alcoholism, hazing, violence and elitist behavior. This TRA-sanctioned ridicule of the Greek community is all in good fun when it affects someone else’s way of life. It doesn’t take a psychology major, Twombley, to realize that many of your underclassmen have little to no realistic knowledge of ISU’s diverse Greek community. You may find it acceptable to mislead the students that are almost exclusively pipelined through Towers, but I find it personally revolting.
In contrast to your unprofessional behavior, I applaud. Hurlburt for putting the reputation of his name, position and fine fraternity on the line in this matter. Triangle Fraternity, you have in Hurlburt a morally upstanding and dedicated member. I am deeply sorry for the Towers Residence Association for choosing Twombley as its president. I suggest that in the future TRA deny resumes written in crayon.
