People’s to host weekly local shows
February 19, 2002
There is a short list of venues for local bands.
Tom Zmolek, manager of People’s Bar and Grill, 2428 Lincoln Way, is trying to change that.
“I saw a need for a place that local bands could play at,” said Zmolek.
Tuesday night will be the first “Two Buck Tuesday,” a new weekly feature at People’s that will feature local bands.
The Lost & Found Lounge, 121 1/2 Welch Ave., is now defunct and Boheme Bistro, 2900 West St., has significantly trimmed its number of local shows.
“A lot of bands have to reach out. If you don’t have a home town following, than you can’t really expect to have one out of town,” said Pat Fleming, co-founder of Bi-Fi Records.
The Ames Area Music Group has been searching for more places to play all over Ames.
“There’s so much [talent] there, people want to play,” said Fleming.
People’s heard the cries of all those bands, and set up this night for them. Kicking off the weekly event will be Blank Skeme and Johnny on the Rocks.
Currently, People’s is booked until spring break, but the bar will be accepting bookings soon, Zmolek said.
For more information, bands should contact Justin Means, head of booking for the local night.
