Love Antidote No. 9

At a time of romantic breakup, nothing seems to soothe the soul better than the self-gratifying hate song. How better to reject the one who rejected you than by song?

Much like the love song, a song evoking a sinister feeling of hate is also void of genre bias.

The list runs rampant including Nazareth’s version of “Love Hurts,” J. Geils Band’s “Love Stinks” and Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” to name a few.

Here’s a few other seldom heard tunes that take hate and apathy to new (lower) levels.

Matt Skiba, singer/guitarist for brooding punk band Alkaline Trio is tuned into his own broadcast on “Radio.” The second part of the chorus is screamed with such conviction that it might indeed come true, “I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you/ Plugged in and ready to fall.”

Jets To Brazil frontman Blake Schwarzenbach opts for a slightly less malicious outcome with his prose. Though lyrically different, “I Typed For Miles” is sung just as intense, “They’re playing love songs on your radio tonight/ I don’t get those songs on mine!”

Finally, Peter Steele, lead singer of the goth/metal band Type O Negative took rage and anger to new lows on its debut album “Slow, Deep and Hard.” He makes his intentions for a lady who betrayed him well known on “Xero Tolerance (Kill You Tonight)” singing, “Staring down at your sweaty embraces/Put my tool right through your faces/ Well buddy boy I hope you enjoyed her/ `Cause I’m an equal opportunity destroyer.”
